Yoshiko Kishino: You Are So Beautiful. 1999 Universal

Tokyo female jazz pianist Yoshiko Kishino graduated from Tohhoh music college, won the keyboard prize in the Yamaha Popular Contest and, in 1990, went to New York to study composition. In 1993 she lead her first group, Brand New. Her first album Fairy Tale (GRP 1995) won her the Golden Disk with Japanese jazz magazine SwingJournal. She has worked together with musicians like Marc Johnson or Peter Arskin. Yoshiko Kishino plays in the lyrical style of the Bill Evans school.

On her new CD, You Are So Beautiful, skip the first four loud and sometimes uninspired tracks. Start with Waltz for Debby, written by Bill Evans. Here, her contemplative and sensitive side can first be heard. In Lennon/McCartney's Here, There And Everywhere, in Jmmy Van Heusen's Here's That Rainy Day or in Billy Preston/Bruce Carlton Fisher's You Are So Beautiful, her magic and dreamy piano play unfolds best. Yoshiko Kishino's partner's on her new CD are Mitsuaki Furuno (b) and Yasushi Ichihara (ds).
