Pianist Kenny Barron featuring a band with David Sanchez and Eddie Henderson and as special guest soloists Regina Carter and Russell Malone delivers with Spirit Song a high quality album with very different compositions. A dreamy and relaxing Sonja Braga, Passion Dance, which is no easy-listening track, a relaxing but never boring Passion Flower, one of the highlights of the CD. The Question is is a perfect mix of sentimentality, melodic charm and virtuosity. Cook's Bay features a great David Sanchez on tenor saxophone, Regina Carter shines with her violin in Um Beijo. Curiously, the title song, Spirit Song, is rather boring, not among the best tunes on this entertaining CD. Born in 1943 Kenny Barron is a pianist and composer. He has written all ten tracks on Spirit Song. The album proves that he remains one of the finest mainstream composers and pianists.
