Tracy Chapman: Telling Stories
Tracy Chapman is one of those female artists that does not strike the
public with their great physical appearance, but rather with their music. Born in
1964 in Massachusetts, the singer and songwriter studied anthropology and African
studies and joined an African percussion group after graduating from
university. Her debut album Tracy Chapman and her first single Fast
Car were huge hits in 1988. Her mix of folk, gospel and blues was
different from the mainstream music but still attracted a large public. Her
earlier albums were politically outspoken and were not allowed to be played on South African radio in 1990. Her new album Telling Stories is about
honesty, lies, vulnerability and love. Her sensitive and fragile songs are not
without a rebelious tone here and there but it is a more intimate
album that searches for and offers comfort and help. The songs on Telling
Stories sound too similar, only Nothing Yet is different.
Despite that fact, Telling Stories stands out since it is not one of
those mass-productions that seem to come from assembly lines. Elektra/Warner,
