Guitarist Pat Metheny has not always been a master of good
taste. Together with bassist Larry Grenadier und drummer Bill Stewart he has
recorded an album above average. There is no cheap jazz-pop. Besides
compositions of Wayne Shorter, Strouse/Adams and John Coltrane Trio 99-00
also contains songs written by Pat Metheny himself. (Go) Get it starts
with rapid guitar-riffs by Pat Metheny, supported by muted drums. Later,
fast-paced bass-playing joins in. Just Like the Day is a melodic ballad. The same can be said of The Sun in Montreal, a song that is
dominated by Pat Metheny's virtuoso guitar play. A Lot of Livin' To Do
is dreamy. Only the trio's version of John Coltane's Giant Steps is
boring. Pat Metheny seems to have been reinvigorated by the trio play with Larry
Grenadier and Bill Stewart.
