With some 84% of all precincts counted,
according to the Maine GOP Chairman Charlie Webster, Mitt Romney narrowly
won Maine's Republican caucuses with 39% (2,190 votes) ahead of the libertarian
Ron Paul with 36% (1996 votes).
Is Mitt Romney back on the
winning street? Not so fast. Neither Rick Santorum nor
Newt Gingrich campaigned actively in Maine.
They finished way behind with 989 votes respectively 359 votes. Other
candidates drew 61 votes.
Out of 258,000 registered Republicans in Maine, only some 5,600 cast ballots
in the 2012 caucuses.
Furthermore, in 2008, Mitt Romney had managed to win 51% of the GOP vote in
Maine. As stated above, that number dropped to 39% in 2012.
The Republican base cannot make up their made and warm up to Mitt Romney,
the only reasonable candidate remaining in the presidential race. The only
alternative would be a fresh candidate such as New York Mayor Michael
Bloomberg stepping into the ring, which is at present as likely as Newt
Gingrich building a base on the moon.
Maine has a moderate GOP base and Romney was once governor in Massachusetts.
Despite these assets, the Republican frontrunner, who only spent a few
thousand dollars in TV advertising in Maine, has not managed a clear win.
Mitt Romney won 11 delegates in Maine, whereas Ron Paul won 10.
Let's hope that the Republicans will warm up to Mitt Romney once he will win the
GOP nomination. Otherwise, we will have to live another four years with the
Messiah in the White House.
