Santorum wins Colorado

On February 7, the
GOP held caucuses in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri. Former House Speaker
Newt Gingrich did not campaign actively in any of the three states, making
instead an appearance in Ohio, one of the primary states on March 6, whereas
Rick Santorum put all his hopes on Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri,
presenting him as the conservative candidate in the race. However, in
the 2008 GOP presidential caucus', Mitt Romney managed to win both Minnesota
and Colorado, before losing the Republican nomination to John McCain, who is
now in support of him. Unfortunately for Romney, both Colorado and Minnesota
have moved further right since 2008, making it more difficult for a moderate
like him to win in those states.
Neither Colorado nor Minnesota hosted a Republican candidates' debate,
despite the fact that 36 GOP delegates were at stake. With all the votes
counted, all 76 precincts reporting, Rick Santorum came in first in Colorado with 40.2%
of the vote. Mitt Romney only finished second with 34.9%. Newt Gingrich was
a very distant third with 12.8%, just ahead of Ron Paul with 11.8%.
We can only repeat our lines written after the
Iowa caucuses: It remains a mystery how an important
fraction of the GOP wants to beat Obama with someone who lost his Senate
seat in 2006, who has never held executive office, who advocates the
teaching of intelligent design and who opposes contraception (Santorum:
“It's not OK because it's a license to do things in a sexual realm that is
counter to how things are supposed to be” (Peter Wehner in Commentary).
