Hotel Hesperia Madrid *****
Article added on August 2, 2003; updated on September 1, 2003

The Hotel Hesperia Madrid is located at number 57 of Madrid's imposing Paseo de la Castellana, the cities most important business and financial street. The building previously hosted the hotel Luz Palacio. When the Hesperia group bought the establishment, they completely refurnished it. In March 2001, the result of the £30 million investment could be experienced for the first time.

The Hesperia group, incorporated in 1971, started with four star hotels. It currently owns over 30 hotels of which the Hotel Hesperia Madrid is the group's flagship. New five star hotels will open soon. The expansion plan foresees the opening of a five star hotel in Barcelona towards the end of 2004, designed by British architect Richard Rodgers, and one in Lanzarote, Canary Island, by G.C.A. of Barcelona, the architects responsible for the Arts Hotel in the Catalan capital.

For legal reasons, the Hesperia group could not change the facade of the Hotel Hesperia Madrid into something more appealing. It also lacks a sports and health center. However, once you enter the hotel, you immediately forget about that.

The lobby, the two bars and the restaurant were created in a minimalist style by the Spanish cutting edge interior designer Pascua Ortega, who is known for his work in the Teatro Real and other buildings of cultural interest. The 171 rooms, including 32 suites, are furnished in a more classical fashion, with attention to detail. In the bathroom, we could enjoy the Bulgari green tea bath line in July 2003. On a daily basis, the hotel's florist places fresh flowers in all rooms and public areas.

The four Penthouse Suites are the work of Mercedes González López de Carrizosa. They all have a terrace with a Jacuzzi and offer a panoramic view of Spain's capital. The suites combine functionality with comfort. The interior is decorated with works of contemporary art. Incidentally, Mercedes González López de Carrizos has also refurnished the suites at the Hotel Wellington.

The Hotel Hesperia Madrid was the first Spanish hotel to offer its guests wireless LAN Internet connections in all conference rooms and public areas. The high speed connections are also available in all rooms and suites. The hotel has banquet and convention rooms. Furthermore, it is equipped with a state-of-the-art business center since, during the week, it is mostly booked by businessmen. On weekends and in the summer months, families and tourists are numerous.

Upon your arrival in the hotel, you are asked which newspaper you would like to receive in the morning. The young staff of 160 ensure a pleasant stay in a refined, luxury and relaxed atmosphere. The breakfast buffet is excellent. It is served at the restaurant La Manzana, where Enrique Martínez offers Mediterranean cuisine for lunch and dinner. At the Scotch Bar, in a cozy atmosphere, you can chose from a selection of over seventy single malt whiskies as well as a variety of fine cigars.

There is one more reason why the Hotel Hesperia Madrid is one of the hottest places in Madrid: the Santceloni Restaurant, named after the birthplace of its chef, Santi Santamaría. The Catalan is one of only four Spanish chefs decorated with three Michelin stars (for his restaurant El Racó de Can Fabes in Sant Celoni, Catalonia). Within seven months of the opening of the Santceloni, he managed to earn a first Michelin star for the new restaurant. Unfortunately, I was not able to test it. It is advisable to reserve your table in advance. Finally, note three books by Santi Santamaría: La Etica del Gusto, El Gusto de la Diversidad, La Cocina es Bella.

The Hotel Hesperia Madrid is a member of The Leading Hotels of The World. In short, it is probably the best modern hotel in Spain's capital.
