Hotel Wellington Madrid
history, online hotel reservation, booking

Article added on August 2, 2003

The Hotel Wellington in Madrid was built in 1952 by the Spaniard Baltasar Iban. Previously, there had been a small hotel in the building which was constructed, according to front desk manager Pablo Mora, in the 1920s. In 1974, the house adjacent to the existing Hotel Wellington was bought. Therefore, the capacity was increased from 150 to 290 rooms. In 2003, the hotel has 160 employees and 266 rooms for nearly 500 guests.

Baltasar Iban and his wife created the Fundación Wellington which today not only runs the hotel, but also sponsors cultural events and activities, mainly in the field of painting and writing (books). The other aim of the foundation is to support its employees, e.g. with nurseries, English teachers, school books for their children, etc.

Among its famous guests, the Hotel Wellington counts the Queen of Spain and the Duke of Wellington, who was curious to find out more about the hotel bearing his name, but with no English affiliation whatsoever. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is another well-known personality who stayed at the hotel situated near the Parque Retiro, Madrid's most famous public park.

Baltasar Iban used to be a farmer before becoming a hotelier. As a result, he kept close ties to the bullfight scene. Still today, famous bullfighters come to the Hotel Wellington to dress before a corrida. Several times a year, after the bullfights, people meet in the hotel to talk about the fights.

The Hotel Wellington was totally refurbished around the year 2000. New suites and medium rooms have been created. The coffee shop, La Llave de Oro, has also been completely refurbished in 2001. It serves small meals too, all day through.

Besides the coffee shop, the hotel also has a bar (Bar Inglés), a 24-hour business center on the first floor, a sauna and of course the only outdoor pool in a Madrid five-star hotel (neither the Palace nor the Ritz have a pool at all).

Most of the year, 75% of the hotels customers are business, corporate travelers. 25% of the guest come for leisure. Only in July and August, the ratio is about 50% to 50%. Most of the guests come from Spain, England, Italy, the United States, Japan and South America, in this order of importance.

Together with the Hotel Hesperia Madrid, the Hotel Wellington is a trendsetter, combining the Hotel's name with the one of a famous restaurant. The union of the Hotel Wellington and the restaurant Goizeko Kabi gave birth to the Restaurante Goizeko Wellington, situated in the hotel, but totally managed by Jesús Santos who has hired Jorge González as executive chef in the kitchen.

The Hotel Wellington is the only five star hotel in Madrid with an outdoor
pool. In 2004, the existing pool will be covered to allow its use in winter.
In summer, the roof will be removed to have an outdoor pool as of today.
A spa will be added too.
