Quinta Perestrello
Information about and photos
of the four-star hotel in Funchal, Madeira
Article added on April 7, 2012
The islands of Porto Santo
and Madeira have been known since ancient times, but were re-discovered in
1418 and 1419 by João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira. The
participation of Bartolomeu Perestrelo as one of the captains of the
discovery is disputed. It is however a fact that the captain became the
first governor of Porto Santo and that his daughter, Filipa Moniz, married
Christopher Columbus who (re-) discovered the new world.
Quinta Perestrello was built in 1840 and is said to have belonged to
descendants of Bartolomeu Perestrelo. In 1991, the quinta was turned into a
hotel and a new wing was added. In 1998, it was bought by the Charming
Hotels of Madeira, who later added their flagship
Quinta das Vistas as well as Quinta do Monte and
Quinta do Estreito
to their portfolio.
Unlike the other three hotels of the group, Quinta Perestrello is a
four-star property and without a restaurant. Courtesy buses bring guests to
the other hotels if so desired. Quinta Perestrello offers snacks all day
long and a series of restaurants and bars are just five-minutes away on
foot.
With just 36 double rooms, Quinta Perestrello is the smallest property of
Charming Hotels Madeira. All rooms feature oak floors, (dark brown) mahogany
furniture and bathrooms with a bathtub. For once, it is nicer to stay in the
new rather than in the old hotel wing, because only the rooms in the
1991-building enjoy either a balcony or a terrace.
I stayed in room 306 on the swimming pool level with my terrace being just
five meters away from the pool. If you prefer more privacy, take a room on
the second or third floor in the new wing.
The hotel offers a courtesy computer as well as free wifi in the lobby. I
was lucky because, in room 306, my wifi worked too, although the signal was
a bit weak.
Quinta Perestrello is situated a 15-minute walk on foot from the old town,
the historic center of Funchal. The 3 km Atlantic promenade to the other
side of the hotel is just a 10-minute walk away.
Guests at the four-star property normally are independent travelers who come
here to discover the city center on foot and/or the rest of the island by
car. Most people leave around 10 or 11 am and come back by 4 pm to enjoy
some time and sun at the pool.
Quinta Perestrello is ideal for travelers who like a good location for a
moderate price in a small hotel with a family atmosphere.
